KAUPA Website

KAUPA is a nonprofit, community-based organization centered in Kalihi Valley on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. They embrace both the traditional Hawaiian way of caring for the land and the scientific process while also educated the area’s underprivileged children. KAUPA was in need of an updated website and database for monitoring the Kalihi stream.

KAUPA : The Original Website

Kaupa’s original website was created by a staff member with basic web training. The site was difficult to navigate and far from engaging. Additionally, it was hosted for free on a GoDaddy server which required an unattractive ad to be placed at the top of the site.

KAUPA : Redesign Directions Presented

KAUPA was presented with two new website directions. The first direction was representative of the community garden and volunteering aspect that makes up KAUPA’s main attraction, Second Saturdays for Sustainability. These events are held the second Saturday of each month and get the local community involved in cleaning the stream and tending to the garden filled with native Hawaiian medicinal and vegetable plants.

The second direction was representative of the Kalihi Valley watershed, which feeds the ocean and sustained local Hawaiians for many years. The site utilizes the updated layout of the logo and extends it’s elements to create a visual depiction of the mountain range and valley of Kalihi.

KAUPA : The Redesigned + Branded Website

The KAUPA team and board decided to mesh the organization/layout of the first direction with the blue concept depicting the Kalihi watershed and valley. The mountain range was updated to be accurate while other elements of the sites were blended together.
