Design Your Own Roadmap to Success

There’s no one-size-fits-all path.

No matter how many “experts” try to sell you their blueprints.

But before you begin any journey towards doing your work in the world, it’s good to know where you’re coming from and get crystal clear on where you want to end up. Having a roadmap is essential, even if you ultimately change your trajectory along the way (which is completely normal in the early years of entrepreneurship).

You won’t be able to get moving in the right direction if you don’t know where you’re heading or where you’re starting from. So today, I want to share how you can design your very own unique roadmap to success!

First, you have to really know and understand yourself.

This isn’t things like your favorite movie or the type of milk you like with your coffee. It’s about understanding your talents, passions, and zone of genius.

It’s also about really, deeply knowing yourself and how you work best.

(As well as what causes you to self-sabotage.)

Once you know this, it’s going to be so much easier to see which parts of your business you’ll be able to handle with ease and which areas you’ll likely need a little bit of help. It also helps you anticipate where you’re going to get tripped up along the way because we all do. Our core wounding, personality type, winning strategies, and subconscious programming will rear their heads every time we step outside our comfort zone. Understanding what that means and how it’s most likely to show up for you helps you move through it with more ease.

Second, you have to build a solid brand foundation.

The same way you must know yourself, you have to know your business as well.

It’s not only about identifying your main income stream(s); it’s all about taking a deep dive into how your particular product or service is changing the lives of others and how to best communicate that to them. Visually, with your content, and in your marketing. If you’re not clear on this (and solid in your personal foundation and how that plays into your brand), it’s hard to be successful. You’ll wobble around trying many different things and never really getting anywhere. Not the goal!

The best starting point is to look into why you’re doing what you’re doing.

Your big why acts as a North Star and helps you effectively communicate your brand to your audience and attract ideal customers that can get behind your stance and message. I wholeheartedly recommend reading Start With Why; it’s going to transform the way you think of doing business.

Third, always filter the advice you’re getting.

While I’m certain most advice is well-intentioned, you have to be able to identify what doesn’t apply to you. Context and discernment are key.

What’s the context of the advice? Is it simply from someone else’s experience and “expertise,” or is it really considering who you are, where you’re at, and what you’re working to create? Is it from their own fears and projection, or is it a true reflection of something worth looking at more closely?

Only you can discern what’s relevant for you and what’s not. Trust that.

This ability to filter through the advice will greatly impact your business journey (because everyone has something to say) and save you time!

Lastly, dream big but act small… at first.

Anything is possible, even in the most “unreasonable” of time frames or circumstances. I believe this wholeheartedly and have witnessed it many times.

That said, when we’re just beginning to get our bearings in business or around a new venture, taking small actions to build momentum and get a sense of how things feel to us can be really helpful. That can look like attending your first networking event and feeling into your elevator pitch with new people or testing a minimum viable product before going after investors to build things out thoroughly.

“Small” is relative when it comes to action towards our big visions.

Set your big, grand vision and time frames, and think about the best small first steps that lean you in the direction you want to go. This is also helpful because sometimes we can get so caught up in getting ready to get ready that we never really start.

What’s the number one concern you have about designing your roadmap to success?

Do you believe it’s possible to build a business entirely on your own terms?

I 100% believe it’s possible, regardless of circumstance.
