Can the Dream of Being a Digital Nomad Become a Reality?

September 25, 2019

Long gone are the days when working from the same dull cubicle and climbing the corporate ladder were the dream.

Now, the dream of being able to work from wherever you want, whenever you want is quickly taking over the world – and is one of the main reasons why people decide to wave their old jobs goodbye and start their own business!

But is the life of a digital nomad really as effortless as we may be led to believe – or is that just another trick social media is playing on you?

Well, let’s find out!

So, really now – can you run a biz and travel the world at the same time?

The short answer is: yes, but it’s not that simple!

To turn this dream into reality, you have to be very realistic about where you are now in life and in business, what your goals are, and what’s your strategy to reach those goals.

For example, if an already established entrepreneur wants to start traveling the globe… who by the way, happens to have a trusted team to fall back on… they will definitely have a much bigger advantage and less financial stress than the dreamer just starting out.

But that doesn’t mean YOUR dream of living the digital nomad life can’t become a reality!

As long as you plan well and execute the right strategy, you may be booking that one-way ticket sooner than later.

Have you decided to give full-time traveling a try?

Here are a few tips to remember before you zip up your suitcases and leave!

Don’t do everything at once!

We’ve all heard the stories of people quitting their jobs and booking one-way tickets to Bali the very next day and living the dream… but hear me out on this one.

While that formula has worked for some, it may not work for everyone. Pacing yourself may still be the better and wiser option.

Running your own business, especially in the beginning stages, requires a lot of time and energy and focus – something you might struggle to find if you’re busy chasing Wi-Fi in Vietnam!

Focus first on being present and growing your business. And then once that side is taken care of (and the financial aspect is more stable and consistent), you’re going to have much more enjoyable travels!

Travel slow

Hopping from one city to another is all fun and games when you’re on vacation – but it quickly becomes exhausting when you have a business to worry about!

Start off with slow travel – spend at least a few weeks (and even months!) at a place before moving on to another. This traveling strategy also comes with an added bonus: you really, really get to dive deep and explore local culture!

Set up a work routine…

…and follow it every day, no matter whether you’re in Zanzibar or New York.

Some people work early in the morning and spend afternoons and evenings exploring – others prefer working late into the night so they have more time during the day. Do whatever works best for you!

It’s easy to fall into the vacation mentality (who can resist all those delicious meals or tropical beaches?!) but you’re not actually on a vacation… well, at least not all the time. 😉 If you want to make this a sustainable dream, you’ll have to be a realistic adult at times (awful, I know).

That’s my best advice for anyone who wants to start living the digital nomad life!

Have you ever traveled while working full time? Do you think that may work well for you?
