Avoiding the Heatwave With Thunderstorms in Leadville

June 20, 2021

It’s been sweltering this past week with the heatwave.

Triple digits, gusty winds, and wildfire smoke have made it unpleasant to be outside. But I didn’t want that to stop me from getting my weekly dose of nature in.

So I hit the road with my new bike in tow and headed up to Leadville!

Leadville is the highest elevated city in the United States and the second-highest community in Colorado. It has an adorable, well-preserved historic district that’s worth a stroll during any time of year.

The views were stunning on the drive in.

I was so grateful for the thunderstorms.

Not only was the weather a good 20 degrees less than the valley, but I loved seeing the moody skies and experiencing the cooling downpours. There was even some lightning! Which, while I love it, is scary in the southwest during fire season.

I took the new bike out on the trails and just enjoyed the quiet.

Glad to have checked off another spot in Colorado.

I may have to head back to the area again if the heat doesn’t let up!
