What to Do When Things Don’t Go According to Plan

March 31, 2020

It happens even to the best of us:

You do the heavy work beforehand. You strategize. You take action to meet your goals.

And then… the plan you’ve spent so much time working on – isn’t working.

Sigh.

Should you just give up – right here and right now?

Well, don’t do that just yet.

While I know this can be an extremely frustrating moment in your business, there’s a way through.

Here’s my best advice to help you navigate times like these!

First things first: don’t despair!

As hard as it’s to believe this right now, plans not working is actually a pretty common occurrencein the business world. It’s just one of those things that come with the job!

The reality is, what you envision won’t always happen. Sometimes, life happens – and it doesn’t happen the way we think it should.

So don’t be too harsh on yourself.

Dust off and keep on going!

What can you do when things don’t go according to plan.

There are a few things you can do when your plan seems to have stopped working.

Are your beliefs too rigid?

Sometimes, our mindset is our biggest enemy.

What are the beliefs you’re nurturing right now regarding this setback? Could it be that those beliefs are making you feel frustrated?

For instance, do you feel that if you do A, then B must follow? Or if you do A, then B and C and D are just the natural way things are supposed to happen?

Words like must and supposed to are not your friends… especially not at times when you’re getting out of your comfort zone and doing something for the first time.

You know, rigid beliefs often lead to very high expectations. And while there’s nothing wrong with setting the bar high, setting it up too high may do you more harm than good in the beginning.

Who says that the only way for this to work is the way you’ve imagined it? As cliché as it sounds, there are plenty of other letters in the alphabet! 😉

Embrace failure.

Don’t fall victim to this whole negative stigma around failure – there’s literally nothing wrong with it!

If you do a quick search online, you’ll find at least a dozen successful entrepreneurs who’ve failed marvelously at something… not once, not twice but SEVERAL times in a row!

Instead of drowning in self-guilt and obsessing about all the why’s, ask yourself three questions:

  • What is this experience trying to teach me?
  • What are the main takeaways here?
  • If this were to happen to a friend, what advice would I give them?

Write down your answers – and then follow your own advice.

Put new lessons into a plan.

Learning from our mistakes is never easy or pleasant… but it does take us places.

Once you have a clear idea of what went wrong and why, plan for success this time.

Let’s say, maybe you’ve started a business without getting to really know your target audience and their pain points. How do you make that right – how do you make it work this time?

Plan actionable steps. For example, maybe you can spend a bit more time mingling with your target audience in real life to find out what did you miss on your first try!

I promise, as long as you’re persistent and optimistic, you’ll get very soon!
