What’s Holding You Back from Starting Your Own Business?

June 13, 2019

Let’s be real: How many times have you wanted to quit your job and start your own business, but dismissed the idea a mere minute later… because of all the many reasons?!

Now’s not the right time or I can’t do this or I’ll never become successful anyway are not valid reasons to stop yourself from embarking on the entrepreneurship journey. And since I know how hard it can be to get started, here’s a short overview of the most common reasons that may be holding you back from creating the business of your dreams, and what you can do about them.

1. I’m too old for this!

I know it’s the biggest cliché ever, but age is just a number – seriously.

It’s never too late to start something new, especially if that something’s going to improve the quality of your life and the lives of others (i.e., living your purpose and contributing in the way that only YOU can). There are hundreds of thousands of people who found success later in life – think Julia Child, Martha Stewart, and Vera Wang, just to name a few!

2. I don’t have the time!

You’d be surprised just how much time there is in a day once you start planning it by the hour.

I use Google Calendar to plan every part of my day, and it’s helped increase my productivity tremendously. If that’s too much fuss for you right now, grab a pen and paper and get into the habit of planning each day the night before. Make a list of what needs to get done and DECIDE when you’re going to do them. It’s better than doing nothing, right? True, you may need to compromise on a couple of things – less TV, less social media, etc – but trust me, you’ll quickly realize you’re not missing out on much, especially when you start to see your business GROW because you’re putting in the time.

Plus, when you become more vigilant about your time by using a calendar and time blocking, you actually create MORE freedom, not less.

3. My family needs me!

Your family needs you to be happy.

In order to take care of others, you have to take care of yourself first. Talk to your partner or family and honestly explain how you feel and what you need and you might be surprised by the amount of support you receive! Compare your schedules and see how you can potentially make it work so you get a few hours for yourself and your business each day or week.

4. I don’t know any of that… stuff!

No one knows any of that business-related stuff before they dive into it and learn. Of course, some people are natural-born entrepreneurs or are inherently tech-savvy, but 99% of everyone who is now successful had to start from the same place you’re at now… at the beginning, where they didn’t know any of that stuff either. 😉

The best way to overcome this is to start learning, and there are hundreds of thousands of available resources online! Remember, you don’t have to learn everything now – Rome wasn’t built in a day, was it? Once you start investing in yourself and your business, you’re not only going to learn everything it takes to run a successful business, but you’re also going to begin building trust in yourself and your ability to navigate your unique entrepreneurial path. Everything is figure-outable, promise.

5. I’m not good enough to run a business!

First of all – yes, you are good enough! And second of all, that’s not an actual reason per se, it’s just your subconscious trying to keep you ‘safe’.

Limiting beliefs and stories show up as perceived obstacles we believe we “see” on the road to what we want, when really, there’s nothing there. And these can be the most damaging kinds of obstacles we encounter.

The only way to beat them? Change your mindset. Transform the way you think and speak about yourself and what you’re trying to do… about what is and is not possible. Who convinced you that you’re not good enough? Prove to yourself and others that you are and keep showing up.

Write down at least 10 reasons why the world needs to hear about your product or business idea and how it’s going to change other people’s lives. Focus on coming from a place of PURPOSE and SERVICE, and that will give you all the motivation and drive you need to move past your fears of not being good enough, smart enough, talented enough, etc.
