Exploring the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness

March 26, 2022

It’s been a while since I’ve meandered.

And now that I’m feeling a little more settled in New Mexico, it felt like time to go ‘splorin.

I did what I always do and I pulled up google and my AllTrails app and just looked around for something that would be a good day trip, away from the city and typical tourist spots. The Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness stood out to me immediately!

The drive was a couple of hours from north Albuquerque, and it led me down some seriously dusty back roads into what appeared to be the middle of nowhere. Flat land all around. Very few trees. A whole lot of arid, desert land.

But also… wild horses!!

Only a half mile from the dirt parking lot is the start of a magical little chunk of land.

Tons of sandstone formations that feel otherworldly.

So. much. fun.

I didn’t hike the full few miles because I’d forgotten a hat and the desert sun is no joke… but I still saw plenty of incredible sites. Would definitely recommend this spot, and it felt so good to be back at my adventuring.
