8 Signs You’re Ready to Start Your Own Business

September 4, 2019

The idea of beginning your journey as an entrepreneur is enough to make most people feel a little bit excited and a tiny bit uneasy – which is completely normal!

Yet sometimes, starting a business is the most obvious and intuitive next step you can take when your side hustle has grown and it’s getting hard to juggle with your job.

While no one can tell you for sure what the right answer is – and no one should decide but YOU – people often overlook just how much they have to give this world and therefore struggle to determine if it’s worth going further.

Since we all need a small push in the right direction sometimes, here are some signs that show you’re ready to start a business… hopefully, this helps you make the right decision for you and your work.

1. Your old job just doesn’t cut it anymore.

And I’m not even talking money here.

While every job comes with its own challenges, you should feel good about the work you’re doing – at least more often than not.

If every Sunday afternoon you’re dreading the idea of spending yet another week at the office and would rather keep immersing yourself in your side hustle, then take that as a pretty big sign you’re ready to start a new chapter in your life.

2. You crave doing work that makes an impact.

Everyone’s here for a reason – and right now, the work you do doesn’t make you feel like you’re making much of a difference, does it?

You know work is work but you feel like there has to be something more to life than just showing up at 9am and forgetting it all at 5pm. And you’re right, there definitely is.

If you’re constantly catching yourself daydreaming about helping others with your work, making meaningful connections, and just growing as a person rather than focusing on your work, consider that another sign that it might be time to make a change

3. You’re confident but you’re also ready to learn!

Being your own boss means that you’re in charge of everything – both the fun things (the work you love to do) and the not-so-fun things (finances, logistics, taxes).

If you see this as something you’re ready to tackle rather than a major obstacle, you’re already one step ahead of most aspiring entrepreneurs. There’s a learning curve for sure, but nothing you can’t master or find support for!

Pro tip: Find out what you need to do to leave the employee mindset behind and step confidently on the entrepreneurship path.

4. You’re not scared of failure.

Or, at the very least, you’re prepared to face failing along the way.

You’re aware that failure doesn’t mean you’ve reached the end of your journey, it’s just part of the process when it comes to starting something worthwhile.

You have your expectations set right – you know there will be setbacks. You know that’s part of the deal. And you also know you’re ready to make. it. work!

5. Others keep saying you should do it!

Not that the opinion of others should influence a major life decision like this…

BUT!

If everyone – and I mean EVERYONE! – is saying it and you’re praised for the work you do, then maybe they’re onto something.

For once, believe the good things others are saying about you, it could change your life for the better!

6. You want more control over your life.

Tired of others being in control of your schedule, your time, and ultimately, your life? I hear you!

Don’t get me wrong, there are sacrifices in running your own business for sure, especially in the beginning. You might even work more than the standard 40hr work week (in fact, you might just plan on that).

But for the biggest part, you decide when you work, where you work from, whom you work with, and how much you’re paid.

7. You feel excited about the idea of running a business.

Successful entrepreneurs share one thing in common: they’re excited about the work they do.

Here’s a good way to decide whether your favorite hobby or side hustle is a good foundation to build your business on – just tick whatever applies.

  • You jump out of bed in the morning because you’re actually looking forward to getting things done
  • Work doesn’t feel like a chore
  • You can talk about your mission and vision for hours
  • You’re feeling content after the work day is over
  • You know you’re making a difference in other people’s lives
  • You can see yourself doing this for years

Nodding yes to all of that? You’ve just hit a jackpot, now it’s time to set some things in motion around it.

8. You’re looking for a sign!
